SANFORD, FL – April 21, 2011 – In 1998, Sanford, Florida experienced the worst tornado outbreaks the State had ever seen. On February 23, more damage and deaths occurred as a result of the severe weather in both the Seminole (Sanford) and Osceola County than ever before. The storms created tornados that reached speeds of almost 200 miles per hour killing 45 people and creating extensive damage. Damage assessments confirmed that tornados reached a “F3” ranking on the Fujita Tornado Intensity Scale. Arriving to provide aid to Sanford was a city of the same name in North Carolina.
Sanford, North Carolina, which provided much needed relief over a decade ago, ironically was struck by a severe tornado this past Saturday, April 16. The new Enhanced Fujita Scale ranked the tornado which swept the city as an “EF3” tornado. Tornados reported during this severe weather event were estimated to have reached wind speeds of 150 miles per hour and greater. So far, 24 lives have been lost and many more were injured from this event. The damage from the storm may be potentially long lasting not just physically, but economically as well.
Because of Sanford, North Carolina’s compassion years ago, the City of Sanford, Florida will be enthusiastically gathering contributions this week to send to the tornado victims. Donations will be encouraged and accepted at any of the three Sanford Fire Stations located at 1303 South Lake Avenue., 300 E. Airport Boulevard, and 1300 Central Park Drive. Harvest Time International will also be collecting donated goods Monday through Saturday from 9 am – 5 pm at their facility located at 225 North Kennel Road.
The following items have been requested by the Lee County (Sanford, North Carolina) Emergency Operations Center:
•Non-perishable food items
•Paper products such as toilet paper, paper towels, and toiletry items

Harvest Time International was founded in 1991 by John and Mary Murphy. It began with the desire of a generous couple to help people, gathering food and basic need items in their own garage to distribute to families in need. Soon the garage was outgrown, the first storage space was rented in 1994.
Due to a rising need in the community Harvest Time International was forced to relocate and add additional warehousing facilities over the years. In the beginning the focus was on sustaining local nonprofit organizations, soup kitchens and food banks in Central Florida and worldwide. In 1999 Harvest Time International opened its doors to directly serve local families through what today is known as the Community Hope Center.
In 2006 Harvest Time International moved into today’s 100,000 sf facility located in Sanford, Florida.
Harvest Time International continues to grow each year, meeting the needs of thousands of families in Central Florida and abroad.
Since its beginning Harvest Time International is characterized by the founders desire to help people in need, through, hard work, dedication and faith in God.
New medical clinic will help Central Florida’s neediest residents
SANFORD — Already filling the bellies of some of Central Florida’s neediest residents, Harvest Time International is getting ready to take care of their belly aches as well.
The facility’s new Medical Care Center has been under construction since mid-November and is expected to open in February or March, said Harvest Time’s chief operating officer.
The staff at Harvest Time International wants to wish you and your family a wonderful and blessed Christmas!
We also want to express our appreciation for your generosity and support in 2010! Your commitment means so much to us but even more to the thousands of families in need which we are able to reach because of yours donations.
“It is a blessing to have bread every week and because of you we are never hungry!”
(The words of a struggling mother who comes for assistance to Harvest Time International and wrote our staff a Christmas Card.)
“Thank you Harvest Time for the help and toys you gave us this year my son will be thrilled!!”
“I appreciate it more than words can express. Without Harvest Time we wouldn’t be making it.”
Harvest Time International was able to assist Haitian earthquake victims – over 60 containers / 2,000,000 lbs of relief products were sorted in our Sanford, FL warehouse and distributed to the hurting country!
Due to the demand Harvest Time International is expanding in 2011 with a Medical Care Center for uninsured families which will be located at our headquarters. Also, another Community Hope Center will be serving families in need in Volusia County, Florida.
Your support is truly wonderful and you are directly impacting needy children and families worldwide. Thank you!
Here are some pictures of the progress! We are planning to open in February 2011. We are still looking for a PA or retired Dr who would like to join our staff and work for a good cause: serving families in need.
Volunteer doctors and nurses are also needed to be able to see as many patients as possible. A survey showed that 60 % of our clients coming for assistance are without any health insurance and are not able to receive medical attention.
We are so excited that we are going to be able to meet this need and make a difference in our community!
Be a part- spread the word and make a donation!
